By Braxton Steichen “Wrestling takes more time than any other sport, but is worth every minute,” says Oakmont Sophomore Cyle Carucci. Wrestling is here once again this winter at OHS. 24 people are on the wrestling team and have been going through constant grueling conditioning for a few months. There are 20 varsity wrestlers and four JVs. Star athletes this year include but aren’t limited to Senior Russel LeBard, and Sophomores Jake Elliott and Yianni Athens. Carucci states: “I’ve been wrestling for two years and it’s the hardest sport in my opinion, but is worth the effort and commitment. I would encourage anyone with determination to come out for wrestling if not this year than next.” Wrestling is becoming one of the most competitive sports with some people dropping as much twenty pounds to wrestle in their desired weight division. “Hopefully this year Elliot will be able to win state. LeBard and Athens should at least make it to Master’s [Tournament], if not state as well.” All of these athletes have shown exceptional performance. Elliott even wrestles on a national level during the summer. Carucci continues “We have a lot of people that are inconsistent about showing up to practice. As hard as wrestling is, people need to be at every practice.” Perhaps behaviors such as this are the reason for their 0-2 record for duals so far this season. With four duals left in the season, the wrestling team has plenty of chances to come back. The difficulty of the situation is that wrestling is an individual sport; consequently athletes can only win their match and hope for the best for their teammates. With high school sports becoming increasingly competitive, Oakmont wrestling needs to continue working in order to not fall behind. |
