Oakmont High School
Home of the Vikings!

| By Jack O’Donnell
On Friday night the gymnasium of Oakmont High School was loud, energized and electric. The crazed Vikings cheered their team on to an impressive 82-70 win over the Jesuit Marauders. The game was close in the first quarter, with the teams ending in a 16-16 tie. It was in the second quarter that Oakmont began to outplay their opponents. The Vikings outscored the Marauders by 13 in the second period and led 46-33 at halftime. With star forward John Adenrele in foul trouble and on the bench much of the second half, the Vikings needed someone to step up big, and Tony Gill did just that, scoring 28 and collecting 12 rebounds in the game. Gill was able to dominate the paint as well as make a couple long three point shots and he and Fred Mobley led the way in a second half where the teams lead was never less than eight. Mobley scored 17 after halftime, 21 total. The responsibility of bringing the ball up was on Mobley and Alex Ford most of the game because of the absence of ball handler Matt Daly. Both Mobley and Ford did a good job bringing the ball up and setting up the offense, but you could see Jesuit trying to take advantage of Daly’s absence by putting on a full court defense and double teaming players with the ball frequently. Solid defensive play down the stretch helped Oakmont to a 12-point win. The No. 4-ranked Vikings (21-6) advance to the D-II semifinals Thursday night at 9 p.m. at Arco Arena to play the number-one seeded Fairfield (24-5). |
