“We are already doing much better this season than last year in league” said Oakmont girls’ basketball team captain Gina Spino as the team started off with a notable pre-season record winning 11 of their 18 games. The fair share of wins launched the Lady Vikings into their league campaign which, unfortunately, began with a loss to Granite Bay on January 6 and then continued with a close game that ended in a win for the Lady Vikings against Rocklin on January 8. It was looking up for the team when they next played Del Oro. The match ended in low spirits as the Lady Vikings left with a 55-28 loss to the Eagles. This was a disappointing blow to the team and Spino felt that it was due to the fact that they “didn’t make the step up from pre-season to the SFL season.” Teammate Lauren Eyester agrees saying that they had “no communication at all [and] didn’t box out or rebound. Since there are so many people moving around and cutting in and out, we have to communicate on the court.” She believes that improvement in communication will continue to help the team and improve their league game scores. Although they might not have stepped it up in their first few league games, Spino believes that they “have made much improvement from last season.” She also says that the team will look to come out with intensity and have a stronger second half of the season. Overall the performance of the girls’ basketball team started out well with 11-7-0 in pre-season; however they will hope to get some more wins to improve their league score. They will be setting their sights on more competitive games and more wins for the future as the league progresses. The team is staying positive and Eyester notes that “[They] will look to finish strong and continue to keep up the team spirit.” |
